An electron gets excited in an Hydrogen atom from atoms smashing into each other during a supernova.
The electron emits a lone photo and settles down.
The photo goes on its merry way encountering many other atoms and molecules on its journey.
Each encounter alters the photon's travel ever so slightly.
Some of its friends are sent careening by huge gravitational forces.
All of them are streached by space itself.
After a tiny fraction of a second after it was born the little photo crashes in to a CCD detector and knocks off an electron.
The poor photon has traveled 67,132,467,900,000,000,000 miles in the blink of its eye only to be killed by my detector.
